What We're Doing

We work together to continually develop and implement sustainable solutions. Through Green Thread, our environmental sustainability platform, we bring innovative and efficient solutions to life. We are passionately focused on reducing the environmental impact within our operations. Here are just a few ways we work to make our campus more environmentally conscious:

 

Check Local Purchasing: Did you know Dining Services sources food from many local farmers, growers and distributors? The list changes throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability.  However, here is a sampling of a few of our partners:

Check Recycling: Dining Services partners with campus to recycle from all dining locations across campus. We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint. Separation and recycling of metal, plastic, glass, cardboard as well as fryer oil in all our locations. We donate all of our bottles and recyclable containers to KDSCL, Kelowna and District Society for Community Living now known as Pathways, this partnership was established in 2003.

Check Food Waste Reduction:  We have implemented our food waste reduction program the program helps to measure, track and reduce food waste on campus!

Check Composting: On campus we divert food waste through composting in the campus’ earth tubs.

Check Green Paper Products: We are using 100% recycled content compostable EcoLogo certified napkin an paper  products across campus with “one-at-a-time” dispensers helping to reduce waste and save trees, energy and water!

Check Reduced and Greener Packaging: Our lug a mug program offers a 50 cent discount in Green Thread, HotSpot, Booster Juice/Extreme Pita and Sunshine Cafeteria. Last year over 1700 mugs were lugged – helping to reduce waste and protect our planet! Where disposables are required we aim to source products that are recyclable, compostable and/or made from recycled and renewable content. We have also purchased new cutlery and plates for the Sunshine Cafeteria. This will reduce the amount of to-go containers that are given out each day.
 

Check Recycled Content Paper: We use recycled content office and copy paper in all dining locations on campus.

Check Green Cleaning: We use Green Seal certified products where possible. These products do not contain phosphorus, are formulated with environmentally responsible ingredients, and do not contain persistent, bioaccumulative or highly toxic substances.  Packaging is also source reduced, recyclable or contains up to 25% post consumer content!

Check Energy & Water Conservation: We train our employees each semester on common energy and water conservation practices in order to conserve precious natural resources.

Check Responsible & Sustainable Food: We are committed to serving up more sustainable food! Over the 2012/2013 school year, 28% of our food purchases were comprised of local, ecological and humane foods; sustainable seafood; and Fair Trade/Rain Forest Alliance Certified coffees, teas and other products, and continues to increase each semester! Our target is to be as close to 40% as we can by the end of 2014!

Check Local: Through our “I go local” initiative, we are excited to be partnering with many producers in the Okanagan Valley within 250 miles and within BC. We place an emphasis on sourcing products from surrounding provinces and within Canada. We have visited many of these farms as we expand our partnerships and integrate more of their local products. Just to name a few, Gambell Farms in Lake Country, Bellman Farms in Armstrong, BC, Farm Crest in Armstrong, Tamarac Fresh Cut Foods in Kelowna, BC, and Chef Mathew’s Garden in Lake Country, BC.

Check Seasonal Processing: We also support our local farmers by purchasing produce in season and process it on site to use throughout the year. Look for local vegetables and fruit in all dining locations.

Check Sustainable Seafood: We are excited to be partnering with our seafood suppliers and conservation groups in moving toward 100% contracted sustainable seafood as per Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and OceanWise Certifications, and/or identified as sustainable by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). By the end of 2013, we will achieve this goal, helping to protect our oceans for years to come!

Check Cage Free: Our grill serves cage free eggs everyday! Purchased from Spring Hill Farms in Westbridge, BC.

Check Sustainable & Local Food Events: We are increasing awareness around the importance or eating sustainably across campus. Look for our “Meatless Monday”, “Local Food Day” and “Farm to Table” events to celebrate the inspiring men and women who produce the food we serve.

Check Dietary Needs Brochure: Available at Green Thread and Sunshine Cafeteria. This brochure informs you about no gluten ingredients, no lactose ingredients, and vegan and vegetarian options on campus.
